Help the victims of the Sumatra, Indonesia, earthquake


On September 30, 2009, a major earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.6 hit the west-northwest of Padang, Sumatra, 220 kilometres (140 mi) southwest of Pekanbaru.

The death-toll estimates range from a few hundred to over 1300, with thousands more trapped in collapsed buildings and under landslides. Government reports confirmed 715 deaths in West Sumatra province.

China increases defense budget 14.9% in 2009

According to Chinese parliament spokesman Li Zhaoxing China plans to increase it’s defensive budget to 480.686 billion yuan ($70 billion). That will be 6.3% of China’s total fiscal expenditure in 2009.
