China despises US celebration of 30th anniversary of Taiwan Relations Act

Source: News - February 26th, 2009

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu says that the Taiwan Relations Act gravely violates basic international rules and undermines the US commitment to China.

The Taiwan Relations Act exists since 1979. It secures the military support of Taiwan through US supply of defensive arms.

The ongoing issue was intensified due to some US Congress members who have called for marking the 30th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. China officially protests against this resolution. Ma Zhaoxu:

Despite China’s clear opposition, a handful of representatives from the US Congress insisted on proposing a resolution to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. We urge the US to abide by the basic norms guiding international relations and the principles enshrined in the three Sino-US joint communiques, not to deliberate and pass the resolution in any form, and properly and prudently handle the Taiwan question.
