Help the victims of the Sumatra, Indonesia, earthquake


On September 30, 2009, a major earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.6 hit the west-northwest of Padang, Sumatra, 220 kilometres (140 mi) southwest of Pekanbaru.

The death-toll estimates range from a few hundred to over 1300, with thousands more trapped in collapsed buildings and under landslides. Government reports confirmed 715 deaths in West Sumatra province.

China, U.S. to collaborate on solar energy technology

China and the United States have agreed to work together on research into advanced solar energy technologies.

The Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEE) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which is affiliated with the Department of Energy, signed a memorandum of understanding over the weekend.
